> ## Agent Instructions
> Maximem Synap is a managed memory layer for AI agents: it ingests conversations and documents, extracts structured memory, and returns scoped context to the agent at retrieval time.
> The Python and JavaScript/TypeScript SDKs are the supported way to use Synap. Write integration code with SDK calls, not raw HTTP requests.
> Start with the Quickstart: https://docs.maximem.ai/getting-started/quickstart.md. Every SDK method is documented in the SDK reference: https://docs.maximem.ai/sdk-reference/overview.md.

# Browser extension

> Bring your Vity memory into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI chat sites in Chrome, and save those chats to the same memory your plugins use.

Each AI chat site keeps its own memory, so what you tell ChatGPT never reaches Claude. The Vity browser extension connects those sites to your Vity memory: while you type, it shows what you have told other AI apps, and after each reply it saves the conversation so later chats can use it.

It is the same memory that the [OpenClaw](/vity/openclaw) and [Hermes](/vity/hermes) plugins and the [Vity MCP server](/vity/mcp/overview) use, as long as everything is connected to the same Vity account.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The extension signs in with your Vity account. It does not take an `mx_` API key; keys are for the plugins and the MCP server.

## Install

**1. Add the extension to Chrome**

Open the [Maximem Vity listing on the Chrome Web Store](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/pnoblhifdakihlkclbbdpialcoiinmfi) and add it to Chrome. The listing is titled "Maximem Vity: AI Memory for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini & Other AI Tools".

**2. Sign in**

Right after the install, Chrome opens a Google sign-in window. Choose the Google account you use for Vity at [app.maximem.ai](https://app.maximem.ai). If you have not finished setting up your Vity account yet, the dashboard opens next so you can complete it.

**3. Open an AI chat site**

Go to one of the [supported sites](#where-it-works), for example chatgpt.com. A Maximem bar appears above the message box.

## Sign in and connect your account

The extension uses the same Google sign-in as the Vity dashboard, so it connects to the same account and the same memory. There are three ways it gets signed in:

* **From the extension.** Click the Maximem icon in Chrome's toolbar, then **Sign in and open dashboard**. Chrome opens a Google sign-in window; pick your account.
* **From the dashboard.** If you are already signed in at app.maximem.ai in the same Chrome profile, opening the dashboard signs the extension in as well.
* **Fallback.** If Chrome cannot open its sign-in window, the extension opens the Vity login page instead. Sign in there with Google and the extension picks up the session.

Once you are signed in, the popup shows your name, your email and a **Synced** badge.

If you close the Google window without choosing an account, the extension treats that as a cancel and opens nothing else. Click **Sign in and open dashboard** again when you are ready.

## Where it works

| Site | Addresses | Memory bar | Saves chats automatically |
| - | - | - | - |
| ChatGPT | chatgpt.com | Yes | Yes |
| Claude | claude.ai | Yes | Yes |
| Gemini | gemini.google.com | Yes | Yes |
| Grok | grok.com, x.com/i/grok | Yes | Yes |
| DeepSeek | chat.deepseek.com, [www.deepseek.com](http://www.deepseek.com) | Yes | Yes |
| Kimi | kimi.com, kimi.moonshot.cn | Yes | Yes |
| Manus | manus.im | Yes | Yes |
| Perplexity | perplexity.ai | Yes | No |
| Genspark | genspark.ai | Yes | No |
| Blackbox AI | blackbox.ai | Yes | No |
| Parallel | platform.parallel.ai | Yes | No |
| Google AI Mode | google.com, in AI Mode search only | Yes | No |

On the sites marked **No**, you can still pull memories into your message, but the extension does not save those conversations. Perplexity chats can be brought in with an [import](#import-past-chats) instead.

## Use your memory in a chat

The Maximem bar sits above the message box. It has a status line and three controls: a switch that turns memory lookups on and off, an **Apply Skill** button, and an arrow that opens the memory list.

1. Type your message. Once it is four words long, the extension looks up related memories. The status line changes from "Continue typing to see and add relevant memories" to "Found 3 relevant memories" (or "0 memories found").
2. Click the arrow to open the list.
3. Tick the memories you want. Each one is added to the end of your message under an `Additional Context:` heading, one line per memory. Untick a memory, or delete its line, to take it out.
4. Read the message and send it as usual.

Nothing is added to your message until you tick it, so you decide what the AI app sees.

To find matches, the extension sends the text you have typed so far to Vity before you press send. If you would rather it did not, turn lookups off (below).

### Pull in a person or topic with a backtick

Type a backtick (`` ` ``) followed by at least two letters of a name. The extension suggests matching people and things from your memory. Pick one to see the facts Vity has about it, then pick a fact to add it under `Additional Context:`.

### Apply a skill

**Apply Skill** rewrites what you have typed using one of the skills in your Vity account, and puts the result back in the message box. The list shows the skills you have pinned in the dashboard, or all of your skills if you have not pinned any, and you can search it. Type something before you apply a skill.

### Turn lookups off

Click the switch on the bar. The status line reads "Memory queries disabled - toggle to enable" and the extension stops sending your draft for lookups. The setting applies on every supported site and stays until you switch it back on.

This switch only controls lookups. It does not stop the extension from [saving conversations](#save-your-conversations).

## Save your conversations

On the sites marked **Yes** in the [table above](#where-it-works), the extension saves the conversation to your vault each time the AI app finishes a reply. It sends your messages, the replies, the chat's title and its web address. Vity then picks out what is worth remembering in the background, so new memories can take a little while to show up.

To turn this on or off:

1. Open [app.maximem.ai](https://app.maximem.ai) in the same Chrome profile where the extension is installed. The dashboard hands the setting to the extension through the page, so it only reaches an extension in that browser.
2. Go to **Settings**, then the **Apps** tab.
3. Under **Live Capture**, switch **Enable Live Memory Capture** on or off.

If the switch already shows off but chats are still being saved, switch it on and then off again. The switch shows what the dashboard last stored in your browser, which can differ from the extension's own setting until you change it once.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The switch covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. On DeepSeek, Kimi and Manus the extension saves conversations whenever you are signed in to it, whatever the switch says. To stop saving on those sites, [sign out of the extension](#sign-out).

### Import past chats

To bring in chats from before you installed the extension, open **Data & Connectors** in the dashboard and use **Start Fetching** for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Grok. The extension opens that site in a minimized window, goes through your chat history in your browser, and uploads it, so you need to be signed in to that site. If you open the window, it shows "Fetching your chats" and closes on its own when it is done.

While an import runs, the extension's popup shows its progress with a button to pause it and resume later.

## Shared with your plugins

Everything the extension saves goes to the vault of the account you signed in with. The [OpenClaw](/vity/openclaw) and [Hermes](/vity/hermes) plugins and the [Vity MCP server](/vity/mcp/overview) connect with an `mx_` API key instead. A key you generate under **API Keys** in the same app.maximem.ai account belongs to the same vault, so a preference you mentioned in ChatGPT can come back in OpenClaw or Claude Code, and the other way round.

If memories do not cross over, check that the key was generated in the account you signed in to the extension with.

## The extension popup

Click the Maximem icon in Chrome's toolbar. When you are signed in, the popup has:

* a search box, **Search memories, chats, pages...**, to look through your vault,
* **Open Dashboard**, which opens app.maximem.ai,
* **Vault overview**, with the number of memories you have saved,
* the progress of a running import, with pause and resume,
* switches for **Page summarizer**, **Sound Like Me** and **Help improve Maximem**,
* **Sign out** at the bottom.

The gear icon opens **Preferences**, with the same switches plus the vault's sync status.

## Other tools in the extension

The extension also carries tools that are not about chat memory. Each has its own switch.

* **Page summarizer** summarizes the page you are on. Press Alt+Shift+S, or right-click the page and choose **Summarize for Me**. The **Page summarizer** switch in the popup adds a Summarize button to every page; turning it on asks Chrome for access to all sites.
* **Sound Like Me** adds a rewrite star to text fields that rewrites your draft in your own voice. It appears only on the sites you pick in the popup, and Chrome asks permission for each one: Gmail, Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Discord, X, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Hacker News, Threads and YouTube.
* **WaitPro** shows reading from your bookmarks while an AI reply loads. It stays off until you switch on **Enable WaitPro** in the dashboard under **Settings**, **Apps**, and it needs bookmarks imported first.

## What leaves your browser

The extension sends data to Vity's servers only while you are signed in. This is what it sends, and when:

| What | When |
| - | - |
| The message you are typing | While memory lookups are on, as you type on a supported site |
| The letters after a backtick and the text you typed before it | When you use a backtick to look up a person or topic |
| Your draft and the chosen skill | When you click **Apply Skill** |
| The whole conversation: messages, replies, title and web address | After each AI reply, on sites that save chats automatically |
| Your past chats | When you start an import from **Data & Connectors** |
| New bookmarks: title, web address and page details | When you bookmark a page in Chrome, or bookmark a post on X |
| The page's text and web address | When you summarize a page |
| The draft in a text field | When you click the Sound Like Me star |

**Usage analytics** go to PostHog, a product analytics service, and are on by default. Events record what happened (for example, that a lookup ran on ChatGPT and how many memories it found), with timings and counts. They are linked to a one-way hash of your email. After the extension updates itself, it also sends one linking event that includes your email, so earlier events stay connected to the hashed ID. A few events also carry short text: the letters you type after a backtick, the word before it, and the names suggested from your memory. To turn analytics off, switch off **Help improve Maximem** in the popup, or click **Analytics: On** at the bottom of the popup.

**Kept in your browser:** your sign-in token, your name and email, the switches above, your recent popup searches and activity, and bookmarks waiting to upload. Your memories themselves are stored in your vault, not in the browser. See [Privacy and data](/vity/privacy) for what the vault keeps and how to delete it.

## Turn it off, sign out, or remove it

| To | Do this |
| - | - |
| Stop memory lookups | Click the switch on the Maximem bar. It applies on every site. |
| Stop saving chats on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok | Switch off **Enable Live Memory Capture** in the dashboard, as described in [Save your conversations](#save-your-conversations). |
| Stop everything | Sign out of the extension. |

The extension has no per-site switch for memory. The bar switch and the capture switch each apply to all sites.

### Sign out

Click the Maximem icon, then **Sign out** at the bottom of the popup. The extension removes its sign-in token and your account details from the browser. With no account, it stops looking up memories, saving conversations and uploading bookmarks; the AI sites show a **Please Login to Maximem.** prompt until you sign in again.

### Remove the extension

Remove it from Chrome's extensions page (`chrome://extensions`). Chrome then opens a short feedback page on maximem.ai.

Removing the extension does not delete memories already saved to your vault. To delete those, see [Privacy and data](/vity/privacy).

## Troubleshooting

> **"Please Login to Maximem." appears on an AI site**
>
> The extension is not signed in. Click **Login** on the prompt to open app.maximem.ai, or click the Maximem icon and choose **Sign in and open dashboard**.

> **"Insufficient credits. Please add credits to continue."**
>
> Your account is out of credits, so memory lookups stop. Add credits in the dashboard at [app.maximem.ai](https://app.maximem.ai). **Apply Skill** needs credits too.

> **The bar says "Memory queries disabled - toggle to enable"**
>
> Lookups are switched off. Click the switch on the bar to turn them back on. The setting is shared across all sites, so switching it off on one site turns it off everywhere.

> **The bar keeps saying "0 memories found"**
>
> Your vault may not have anything on that subject yet. A new account starts empty; memory builds up as the extension saves your chats, or faster if you [import past chats](#import-past-chats).
>
> Saved a chat a moment ago? Vity processes it in the background, so give it a little time before you expect it in lookups.

> **Chats from a site are not being saved**
>
> Check the [table](#where-it-works): Perplexity, Genspark, Blackbox AI, Parallel and Google AI Mode are not saved automatically. On ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, check that **Enable Live Memory Capture** is on in the dashboard (switch it off and on again if you are unsure), and that the extension is signed in.

> **The Maximem bar does not appear on a supported site**
>
> The bar attaches itself to each site's message box. Reload the tab first. If it still does not appear, the site may have changed its page layout, which needs an extension update.

> **The popup says "Something needs fixing" or "Extension context invalidated"**
>
> The popup lost its connection to the rest of the extension, which can happen after an update. Click **Open extensions page** in the popup and reload the Maximem extension there.

> **Closing the sign-in window did nothing**
>
> That is expected: closing the Google window counts as a cancel. Click the Maximem icon and choose **Sign in and open dashboard** to try again.
