> ## Agent Instructions
> Maximem Synap is a managed memory layer for AI agents: it ingests conversations and documents, extracts structured memory, and returns scoped context to the agent at retrieval time.
> The Python and JavaScript/TypeScript SDKs are the supported way to use Synap. Write integration code with SDK calls, not raw HTTP requests.
> Start with the Quickstart: https://docs.maximem.ai/getting-started/quickstart.md. Every SDK method is documented in the SDK reference: https://docs.maximem.ai/sdk-reference/overview.md.

# Privacy and data

> What Vity stores about you, where it is kept, which outside services process it, how it is protected, and how to delete it.

This page describes what the Vity service does with your data, as it works today. It covers what Vity keeps, where it keeps it, who else sees it, and how to remove it. For the legal terms, open **Settings** in the dashboard at [app.maximem.ai](https://app.maximem.ai), go to the **Privacy & Data** tab, and click **View Policy**. The [terms and conditions](https://maximem.ai/terms) are on maximem.ai.

## What Vity stores

| What | Where it comes from |
| - | - |
| Your name, email address and profile photo | Your Google sign-in, and any changes you make in **Settings** |
| The full text of conversations you send to Vity | Automatic capture in the [browser extension](/vity/browser-extension), [OpenClaw](/vity/openclaw) and [Hermes](/vity/hermes), chat imports, and the MCP `capture_conversation` tool |
| Memories: short statements about you, such as facts, preferences and goals | Taken from those conversations, or saved directly with `/remember` and the plugins' agent tools. Facts from the MCP `remember` tool are held for your review first and become memories only once approved |
| Summaries of your conversations, and the topics you know about | Worked out from your conversations |
| A map of the people, places and things you mention, and how they connect | Worked out from your memories |
| A profile: company, role, location, education, interests and similar | Built from your activity. You can see and edit it under **Settings**, **Profile** |
| A note of each page you summarize, with its title and link | The page summarizer and the MCP `summarize` tool |
| Bookmarks | Bookmark imports, WaitPro, and posts you bookmark on X while the extension is signed in |
| Your voice card and writing samples | **Sound Like Me**, if you use it |
| Content from Gmail, Calendar or WhatsApp | Only if you connect them under **Settings**, **Connections** |
| Your API keys | Stored only as a fingerprint (a SHA-256 hash), never the key itself |
| Usage records | One entry for each action that uses credits |

Vity keeps the conversations you send separately from the memories it makes from them. Deleting a memory doesn't delete the conversation it came from.

## Where it is stored

Vity spreads your data across several kinds of storage, each with its own job:

* **A database** holds your account, your memories and the records worked out from them.
* **A search index** holds a copy of each memory's text, so Vity can find memories by meaning.
* **A graph database** holds the map of people and things.
* **A cache** holds recent results and work in progress.
* **Amazon S3** holds copies of the conversations you send, and your voice card.

The dashboard and the sign-in service run on Vercel. Requests from the dashboard and the browser extension pass through that service on their way to Vity.

## Which outside services see your content

Vity uses outside AI models to turn conversations into memories and to answer requests. These two providers receive your content:

| Provider | What it receives | Why |
| - | - | - |
| OpenAI | Your full conversations, your memories, pages and text you ask Vity to summarize, and text you give Vity's writing tools, such as Sound Like Me, to rewrite or reply to | To summarize conversations, pick out memories and the people and topics in them, merge related memories, build the profile that `get_user_context` returns, summarize pages, and write in your voice |
| Groq | What you or your agent are asking about, including drafts the browser extension looks up as you type, with the memories that might match; the opening message of each conversation; pairs of similar memories | To find and rank the memories that answer a recall request, sort conversations by topic, and spot duplicate memories |

How long each provider keeps what it receives is set by that provider's own terms.

Some processing doesn't leave Vity's servers. Vity turns text into search vectors on its own servers, with an open-source model. Your text isn't sent to an outside service for that step.

Other services involved:

* **Composio** handles the connection when you connect Gmail or Calendar.
* **PostHog** receives the browser extension's usage analytics. They are on by default; switch off **Analytics** in the extension's popup to stop them. The [Browser extension page](/vity/browser-extension) lists what the events contain.
* **The Hermes plugin** sends usage events (timings, counts and which settings are on) to Maximem. Set `MAXIMEM_ANALYTICS=0` to stop them; see [Configuration](/vity/configuration#hermes-plugin).
* **Vercel** and **Amazon Web Services** host parts of Vity, as described above.

## How your data is protected

**In transit.** The browser extension, the plugins and the MCP server connect to Vity over HTTPS, and the dashboard is served over HTTPS.

**At rest.** Vity encrypts some of your data with its own key before storing it:

* The text of each memory in the database, and the summaries of your conversations.
* Your Sound Like Me voice card and writing samples.

The copies of your conversations in Amazon S3 use Amazon's server-side encryption (AES-256).

Other copies aren't encrypted by Vity: the copy of each memory in the search index, the graph, memory text held in the cache, and some records worked out from your conversations, such as topics and profile fields.

**Not end-to-end encrypted.** Vity's servers need to read your content to pick out memories, search them and answer requests. The AI providers listed above also receive it in readable form.

**API keys.** Vity stores a fingerprint of each key, not the key. It can check a key you send, but can't show it again.

## Who can reach your memory

* **Your keys and your sign-in reach only your own memory.** Vity works out whose memory to use from the key or sign-in on each request, so your key can't be used to reach another account.
* **Anyone with one of your keys can read and change your memory.** All keys on your account reach the same memory. If a key leaks, revoke it under **API Keys** in the dashboard. See [Configuration](/vity/configuration#revoke-a-key).
* **Agents can't delete through the MCP server.** It doesn't offer a delete tool. See [Deleting memories](/vity/mcp/tools#deleting-memories).

## Delete your data

### Delete one memory or a few

1. In the dashboard, open **Memories**.
2. Open the menu on a memory and choose **Delete**. It is deleted straight away; there is no confirmation step.

To delete several at once, select them and click **Delete** with the count. **Select all** selects only the memories on the current page.

Vity removes the memory from its database and its search index, and removes the memory from the graph. People and things it mentioned, and the links between them, can stay in the graph.

Some things stay after you delete a memory:

* **Cached results.** Recent recall results are cached, so a deleted memory can still appear in recall for a few minutes.
* **Earlier versions.** When Vity merges or updates memories, it keeps the earlier versions and marks them as replaced. Deleting a memory doesn't delete its earlier versions.
* **Where it came from.** The conversation the memory came from, that conversation's summary, and topics worked out from it stay stored.
* **Processing copies.** Vity's processing queue can keep a copy of a memory's text after the memory is deleted.

### Ask your agent to forget

The OpenClaw `maximem_forget` tool and the Hermes `vity_forget` tool (or `hermes maximem_vity forget`) delete memories that match what you describe. Both show a preview first and delete only when you confirm.

* A request with a description deletes up to 100 of the closest matches.
* A request with no description, which OpenClaw allows, deletes up to your 1,000 most recent memories. That may not be all of them.
* Each request uses 1 credit, previews included.

These requests delete memories the same way as the dashboard, so the same things stay afterwards.

### Delete your voice data

On the **Sound Like Me** page, click **Delete my voice data**, type `DELETE MY VOICE`, and confirm. This removes your voice card, your writing samples and your tone settings.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting your account does not delete your voice data. If you use Sound Like Me, delete your voice data first.

### Delete your account

1. In the dashboard, open **Settings**, then the **Privacy & Data** tab.
2. Under **Danger Zone**, click **Delete Account**.
3. Type `DELETE MY ACCOUNT` and click **Delete it**.

Vity signs you out and deletes your data in the background. Account deletion removes:

* All your memories, including earlier versions, from the database, the search index and the graph.
* The copies of your conversations stored for your account in Amazon S3.
* Your bookmarks, your stored WhatsApp messages, your Echo and its conversations, and your credits. Connected apps are disconnected.
* Access for all your API keys. They stop working.

Account deletion doesn't remove these today:

* Your Sound Like Me voice data. Delete it first, as described above.
* Some records worked out from your conversations: conversation summaries, the topics you know about, your profile fields, and the short-term context Vity keeps about recent conversations, including its copies of those conversations.
* Copies of memory text left in Vity's processing queue.
* An inactive account record, and a log entry of the deletion that includes your name and email address.

To ask about removing these, email [support@maximem.ai](mailto:support@maximem.ai).

## Export your data

In the dashboard, open **Settings**, then the **Privacy & Data** tab, and click **Export** next to **Export my data**. You get a JSON file with your account details, your email and notification settings, and your most recent notifications (up to 500).

The export doesn't include your memories. Vity has no way to export your memories today.

## How long Vity keeps your data

* **Memories and the records worked out from them** stay until you delete them or your account. Vity doesn't delete memories after a set time. When it merges related memories, it keeps the originals, marked as replaced.
* **Copies of your conversations** are kept separately from your memories, and deleting a memory doesn't remove them. Deleting your account removes the copies stored for your account in Amazon S3.
* **Recall results** are cached for a few minutes.
* **Data in your browser.** The browser extension keeps some data in Chrome, and signing out doesn't clear all of it. The [Browser extension page](/vity/browser-extension) lists what it keeps.
