Summarize For Me reads a long page, thread or video and gives you a short summary in the shape you choose. It checks the summary against the source and marks it Source checked or Unverified. When Vity has relevant memory about you, it also tells you why the piece matters to you, so the same article reads differently for different people. You can use it two ways: in the dashboard, by pasting a link or text, and in the browser extension, where a floating Summarize button works on the page you are reading.

What you need

  • A Vity account at app.maximem.ai.
  • For the extension: the Vity browser extension signed in, with Page summarizer switched on in its popup.
  • Saved memories make the “why this matters to you” part better, but they are not required.

Summarize in the dashboard

1

Open the page

In the sidebar, expand Apps and click Summarize For Me.
2

Add a source

Pick URL and paste the link of an article, post, report or transcript, or pick Text and paste the raw text. Very long text (over 50,000 characters) shows a warning that it may be truncated.
3

Pick a summary type

Choose TL;DR (a quick one or two paragraphs), Bullets (key points in a scannable list), Actionable (next steps and concrete actions) or Longer (a detailed narrative). The dashboard starts on TL;DR.
4

Decide whether to save it to memory

Save to Memory is ticked by default. When it is ticked, Vity saves a short note about what you read (the title, the address and the main takeaway, not the full page) to your memory. Untick it to skip that.
5

Click Summarize

The page shows four stages: Extracting, Finding context, Writing summary and Checking source. Then the summary appears.

Read the result

A summary can include Core Insight, Detailed Summary, Key Points, Why This Matters, Action Items and Caveats, depending on the type you chose. A Source checked badge means the claims were verified against the source; Unverified means they could not be, and the Source Verification panel says to read it with extra care. Use the copy button to copy a section, and Is this useful? to rate the summary.

Summarize while you browse

1

Turn on Page summarizer

Click the Vity icon in Chrome and switch on Page summarizer (“Show the Summarize button on web pages”). Chrome asks for access to all websites, because the button has to be able to appear on any page. Switching it off hides the button and the other triggers everywhere.
2

Open something worth reading

The floating Summarize button sits on the right edge of the page. It appears on pages with enough readable text. On a YouTube video page it reads Summarize video, and when you select a passage of text it reads Summarize selection and summarizes just that passage. Drag it up or down to move it; it remembers its position per site.
3

Choose a type and run it

Hover the button to pick Longer, Actionable, Bullets or TL;DR. The extension starts on Bullets and remembers your last choice. You can also press Alt+Shift+S, or right-click the page and choose Summarize for Me.
4

Read, copy or keep it

The summary opens over the page with a Copy button, Open in side panel, and a History view of Recent summaries. The side panel, titled Summarize For Me, keeps Previous summaries too.
Very long pages are summarized in sections. After the first section, Continue Summarizing does the next one, up to three sections in total. Once you have several sections, Consolidate into one summary merges them; a consolidated overview is labelled Merged from sections because it is checked against the section summaries, not the original page. If a source is longer than three sections, the summary tells you only the first three are covered.

Where it works

Any web page, article or YouTube video, on http and https pages. The extension summarizes the text of the page you are on, or just your selection if you highlighted at least 120 characters. On a YouTube video it uses the video’s spoken transcript. In the dashboard, anything you can paste as a link or as text.

Settings and turning it off

  • Hide the button everywhere: switch Page summarizer off in the extension popup. The shortcut and the right-click item stop working too.
  • Skip saving a note to memory: untick Save to Memory in the dashboard before you click Summarize. The extension has no such choice; each summary it makes also saves a short note to your memory.
  • Remove what was saved: the notes go into your Vity memory. See Privacy and data for what you can review and delete.

What it uses and sends

  • Dashboard: the link or text you give it. The page says full source content is sent only to Maximem for summarization.
  • Extension: the text of the page (or your selection), its address and its title. On YouTube video pages it sends only the address, so Vity can fetch the transcript. Nothing is sent until you run a summary.
  • To personalize the result, Vity looks at your saved memories and profile.
  • The extension keeps a history of your recent summaries in your browser.

Troubleshooting

  • Could not summarize this page.: try again, or select just the part you want and summarize the selection.
  • Summarization timed out. Please try again.: the page took too long. Try again, or summarize a selection.
  • Could not reach the summarizer. Please try again. and Could not start a new summary. Open the page and try again.: reload the page and run it again.
  • Could not summarize the next section. or Could not consolidate the summary.: click the button again.
  • This looks temporary. Try again after N seconds (dashboard): wait the number of seconds shown and retry.
  • The button does not appear: check that Page summarizer is on and that you allowed access to all sites. The button only shows on http and https pages with enough readable text (about 180 words). On a shorter page, select at least 120 characters of text and the button appears as Summarize selection.
